Mechanical objects
they get old and bust
they harbor a beautiful menace
in their rust
the bells of Yorkminster
clanging off kilter
I noticed their sound
then I noticed the blue of the foxgloves around you
There's a severed sound
to the battered bells
peeling on
I was always
an emotional kid
but the desire to sing
luxuriated in my bones
Your songs would inspire
every gilded clown
Now they're steeped in a menace
as I walk through this piss-ant town
(on my way to the old home)
There's dust on the wires
There's a cascade to the choir's unison
and I'm beginning to see the light
shaded through the mire of strife
Because it's the strife and not the ease
that bears the sweeter melody
You could try to grab it
But this town will disappear
it was just a figment
your fleeting frontier
SO gorgeous and fragile. Setting the tone for the whole set, this track is so SO sweet and lovely... the entire LP is a revelation and such a joy! EXTREMELY well done!! Ur Trommler
“Portraits” is a collection of expertly drawn narrative songs with sharply observed lyrics and rustic instrumentation. Bandcamp New & Notable Jun 25, 2022
Maybe the best thing David ever did, which makes me extremely sad. A Jews record in all but name, but more direct in its lyricism without losing that indescribable feeling, that beauty and sorrow and lighthearted sarcasm all rolled into one profound set of lyrics that are David Berman. Not to mention the band playing on the record is probably the best Berman ever recorded with. Rest in Peace DCB. jack_thorn16
